Used car buying checklist

1. Confirm the VIN and vehicle history.
2. Check exterior panels, glass, lights and tires.
3. Inspect the engine bay for obvious leaks or damage.
4. Check fluid levels and visible belts/hoses.
5. Test interior electronics, climate controls and safety features.
6. Start the vehicle from cold when possible and listen for unusual sounds.
7. Test the brakes, steering, transmission and acceleration during the drive.
8. Check warning lights before and after starting.
9. Ask for maintenance records and compare them with the vehicle history.
10. Review the complete out-the-door price before signing.
